{"id":99,"date":"2014-10-30T11:46:29","date_gmt":"2014-10-30T18:46:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thenscaler.com\/?p=99"},"modified":"2014-10-30T23:27:33","modified_gmt":"2014-10-31T06:27:33","slug":"building-a-test-loop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thenscaler.com\/?p=99","title":{"rendered":"Building A Test Loop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since the test loop project is a dry run for a couple of key methods I expect to use on the new layout, I decided to start\u00a0with a little formal planning using <a title=\"CadRail\" href=\"http:\/\/cadrail.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">CadRail from Sandia Software<\/a>. Years ago I tried an earlier version of their product and found it difficult to use. This time I did much better. The current version, for all its CAD power, is really pretty easy to use for basic planning. I <a title=\"CadRail Demo\" href=\"http:\/\/cadrail.com\/demo9.htm\" target=\"_blank\">downloaded the demo<\/a>, spent a few hours doing the tutorial, and was able to produce this simple plan for a 2&#8242; x 3&#8242; test module in short order.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_101\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thenscaler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/test-loop-plan.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-101\" class=\"wp-image-101 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thenscaler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/test-loop-plan.jpg\" alt=\"document\" width=\"600\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thenscaler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/test-loop-plan.jpg 600w, https:\/\/thenscaler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/test-loop-plan-300x213.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-101\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Track Plan for the Test Loop.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Not much to it: a loop, a turnout and a spur.\u00a0I had not purchased the product yet so I didn&#8217;t have\u00a0track and structure libraries to work with; everything was done\u00a0with the <a title=\"CadRail Features\" href=\"http:\/\/cadrail.com\/features.htm\" target=\"_blank\">general features,\u00a0tools and components<\/a>. The color coding is\u00a0to indicate\u00a0wiring blocks; essential to using the test loop to work out block detection and other technical issues.<\/p>\n<p>When I then laid the track I\u00a0was able to replicate the plan exactly, down to the too-close clearance (to the edge of the module) at the turnout. I could have shifted the whole thing during build to improve the clearance but on this occasion the point was to reproduce track plan exactly as drawn without significant adjustments; and to see how it turned out.\u00a0No surprises.<\/p>\n<p>I had CadRail show the radius points for each curve on the plan (one of many view options). Locate the radius point exactly on the layout surface and, using a compass, you can draw the correct track centerline exactly where it is supposed to be. You can print a plan with grid lines and dimension measurements to help transfer the plan &#8212; if you want to sacrifice a lot of paper to the cause, you can even print in real size. Having struggled to transfer hand drawings with dubious calculations to real world materials in the past, this is a definite improvement. At <a title=\"CadRail Download Order Page\" href=\"http:\/\/cadrail.com\/order.htm\" target=\"_blank\">$79 to download the full software and libraries, it\u2019s a good deal <\/a>\u00a0(for a bit more you can get a printed manual and CD-ROM installation disk, with a few extras to sweeten the deal. I went ahead and purchased <a title=\"CadRail on CD-ROM with Manual\" href=\"http:\/\/cadrail.com\/printed_manual_with_cd_rom.htm\">the <em>full monte<\/em><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Here is a view of the foundation for the loop.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thenscaler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/test-loop-frame.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-103\" src=\"https:\/\/thenscaler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/test-loop-frame.jpg\" alt=\"test loop frame\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thenscaler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/test-loop-frame.jpg 600w, https:\/\/thenscaler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/test-loop-frame-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It is a simple box frame, 2&#8242; x 3&#8242; x 8&#8243;, made from 1 x 2 and 2 x 2 poplar, with a 1\/4&#8243; oak plywood top (<a title=\"Hardwoods at Lowes\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lowes.com\/Lumber\/Wood-Composite-PVC-Boards\/Hardwood-Boards\/_\/N-1z10t2a\/pl?Ns=p_product_qty_sales_dollar|1#!&amp;rpp=32&amp;page=1\" target=\"_blank\">all from Lowes<\/a>). In the past I&#8217;ve used common pine for benchwork. I chose hardwoods this time because I suspected they might work better for a modular system than softwoods, especially since I am trying to thin down the\u00a0structure as much as possible while stiffening it as much as possible. Hardwoods are generally more dimensionally stable than low grade pines, especially in the smaller milled sizes. Furniture grade pine is good, but still not as strong as hardwoods and hard to get in my area. Hardwoods cost more, but for a small layout that extra cost is negligible.\u00a0Poplar\u00a0in the two sizes I&#8217;m using runs about $1 per linear foot, and is easy to work with. [Some poplar products are marketed as Sustainably Produced. I don&#8217;t know that is true with all\u00a0poplar products.]\u00a0The payoff is how much easier it is to keep your woodworking thin,\u00a0straight and strong.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_104\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thenscaler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/test-loop-frame-detail.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-104\" class=\"wp-image-104 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/thenscaler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/test-loop-frame-detail-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"test loop frame detail\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thenscaler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/test-loop-frame-detail-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thenscaler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/test-loop-frame-detail.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-104\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Corner Detail<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I created a box frame with a top, not a fully enclosed box or <a title=\"n-trak  box beam\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ntrak.org\/Documents\/NTK_DS4.3-BoxBeam.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">box beam<\/a>.\u00a0 The joinery is simple lap joints with some mitered joints at the corners; nothing fancy or complicated. Brads held the frame together while the glue set (the classic <a title=\"Norm Abram, The New Yankee Workshop\" href=\"http:\/\/www.newyankee.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Norm Abram<\/a>\u00a0technique.). I included a reinforcement bar under the plywood top; It is not absolutely necessary on a box this size though it did contribute to getting everything square and flattening the plywood.<\/p>\n<p>I topped the plywood with 1 inch insulating foam.\u00a0The resulting structure is light and amazingly stiff.\u00a0 You can&#8217;t twist it easily; you&#8217;d have to push it past the breaking point to deform it.\u00a0This is pretty much what I had in mind. I\u2019m hoping that a substantial hunk of foam under the track will help suppress the mechanical sounds of locomotive mechanisms, which are not the sounds I really want to hear.<\/p>\n<p>Finding a source of foam was more complicated than I thought it would be. The insulating foams sold for building purposes have changed over the years. Most are now faced with foil, paper or other additional materials. For my purposes, those extra materials are not useful. Then there is the whole problem of transporting 8&#8242; x 4&#8242; sheets of foam strapped to the top of the car and subject to easy damage.<\/p>\n<p>Turns out that Owens Corning\u00a0produces an <a title=\"Owens Corning Foamular\" href=\"http:\/\/www.foamular.com\" target=\"_blank\">unfaced foam product that is geared to the hobby market<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/thenscaler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/foamular-label.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-105\" src=\"https:\/\/thenscaler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/foamular-label-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"foamular label\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thenscaler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/foamular-label-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thenscaler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/foamular-label.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>It\u2019s a dense foam that resists compression and holds pins very well. It comes in easy to transport and use 2&#8242; x 2&#8242; x 1&#8243; squares. The only source I\u2019ve found for it so far is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.homedepot.com\/p\/Project-Panels-2-ft-x-2-ft-Project-Panel-PP1\/203553730?keyword=owens+corning+foamular#specifications\" target=\"_blank\">The Home Depot, where it costs $5.48 per square<\/a>\u00a0as of this writing. I thought that was pricey at first and, compared to a full 8 x 4 sheet of building Styrofoam,\u00a0is it is. But compared to <a title=\"Woodland Scenics 1&quot; Foam Sheet at Hobby Inc.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hobbylinc.com\/woodland-foam-sheet-1-x1x2-4-model-railroad-foam-st1424\" target=\"_blank\">hobby specialty foam products<\/a>, it\u2019s<strong> very reasonable<\/strong> at less than $1.50 per square foot for 1 inch thick stock; and I can get it locally.<\/p>\n<p>Building with foams presents several new challenges. At the top of the list is finding adhesives that are foam-safe. Many caulks and adhesives will attack foam. Secondly, since I am joining dissimilar materials in many instances, the caulk\/adhesive has to work with all materials being joined. Porous materials are usually easy; non-porous materials like most plastics are more difficult. Needless to say, I spent a fair amount of time at both The Home Depot and Lowe\u2019s reading labels.<\/p>\n<p>For adhering foam board to plywood I selected <a title=\"Available at Home Depot\" href=\"http:\/\/www.homedepot.com\/p\/Loctite-PL300-10-fl-oz-Foamboard-VOC-Adhesive-1421941\/202020476#specifications\" target=\"_blank\">Loctite PL300 Foamboard Adhesive<\/a>. This product is primarily formulated for adhering foam insulation to basement walls and the like, so once it takes hold it is strong.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thenscaler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Loctite-PL300.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-107\" src=\"https:\/\/thenscaler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Loctite-PL300.jpg\" alt=\"Loctite PL300\" width=\"600\" height=\"147\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thenscaler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Loctite-PL300.jpg 600w, https:\/\/thenscaler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Loctite-PL300-300x73.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I used about 2\/3 of a tube to adhere two pieces of foam to the plywood; I think I can use less next time. Initial grab is mild, giving plenty of working time, but also requiring some sort of strategy to hold the foam in place until the product sets. I tried both clamping and screws: a few bugle-headed screws proved the best method for anchoring the foam while it set. I had a mild warp in one piece of foam that I easily straightened in the process. I bought some <a title=\"Available at Lowes\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lowes.com\/pd_160329-12-LN-704_0__?productId=3014660&amp;Ntt=liquid+nails+for+projects&amp;pl=1&amp;currentURL=%3FNtt%3Dliquid%2Bnails%2Bfor%2Bprojects&amp;facetInfo=\" target=\"_blank\">Liquid Nails for Projects <\/a>then did a quick test to compare it to ordinary white glue. White glue will adhere to the foam, but it\u2019s a weak bond easily broken. Liquid Nails provides a much stronger bond.
